What are palaMOUNTAINS MAX Plus protected vitamins and their importance?
Choline
- Unprotected Choline added to feed is extensively destroyed in the rumen.
- Effects of coated Choline on post-calving health are well established.
- Choline is essential in metabolism of fats and transmission of nerve impulses.
Folic Acid (B9)
- Unless fed in a protected form, Folic Acid supplied in the feed is almost totally destroyed in the rumen.
- Research has proven that the demands of fetal growth pre-calving out strip the rumen’s ability to produce Folic Acid.
- Essential for general metabolism, including protein synthesis, Folic acid is required for the production red and white blood cells.
Riboflavin (B2)
- Riboflavin is extensively degraded in the rumen.
- Has a role in energy metabolism and growth.
A note about Vitamin E:
- Is an antioxidant and thereby permits cells to maintain their natural defences.
- Approximately half of vitamin E supplied in feed is destroyed by rumen microbial flora.
Don’t cows produce their own B vitamins?
The microbes of the rumen produce many B complex vitamins in quantities that are sufficient for moderate levels of production. Numerous studies have shown performance and health benefits to supplementation of B complex vitamins.
During periods of stress, low or erratic feed intake or during high demands (high milk production) rumen microbial production may not be sufficient to meet demands.
